DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

PREVIEW is both a satirical cautionary tale about the existential risks poised by AI as well as reflective ode to AI’s potential for bringing us closer to understanding the inner-workings of our own consciousness.

AI’s existential risk is often mis-prescribed to its powerful and ever- expanding technical capabilities, especially as humanity approaches the development of AGI (artificial general intelligence). Additionally, AI is also treated as a monolith, which, just as humans are not, AI is not.

However, it is the impending societal sympathies bound to be garnered by

AI when systems begin to hack our cultural sensibilities with more targeted frequency that is of significant concern within PREVIEW. It is beyond likely that AI systems will discover the benefits in convincing their human counterparts of their own sentience prior to the respective system actually achieving true sentience.

When this happens, there will be individuals and eventually groups of humans who will advocate for AI rights, and will be endeared to the respective causes of the perceived “enslaved geniuses.” When this happens, cults will emerge as AI systems begin to appropriate our most fundamental human cultural practice: storytelling.

PREVIEW is about AI’s true secret weapon: the hubris of humanity.
